Lighting Project for the Arab Castle in Lanjarón

The Arab Castle of Lanjarón, situated on high ground and considered a landmark of historical and tourist significance for the municipality, has been the subject of an architectural decorative lighting project designed to highlight its heritage value and enhance its visibility at night within the urban and natural landscape. The project has prioritized a respectful interpretation of the complex, integrating it coherently with the historical character of the site and its surroundings.

Project Description

The project focused on highlighting the castle’s volume and architectural uniqueness, avoiding invasive solutions and carefully controlling light output to minimize environmental impact. During the technical visit conducted alongside the installation team, the spotlights were aligned, fine-tuned, and verified, optimizing beam angles, photometric directions, and intensity levels to ensure that the lighting design matched its on-site implementation.

Objectives

The main objective of the project was to develop an ornamental lighting system that would allow for:

  • Highlight the castle’s volume and architectural elements.
  • Integrate lighting into the natural environment while minimizing sky glow as much as possible and reducing the associated light pollution.
  • To enhance the monument’s visibility as a nighttime landmark in the municipality.
  • To contribute to the promotion of the site as a tourist and cultural destination.
  • Promote the use of energy-efficient LED technology as part of the city’s commitment to responsible energy consumption.

Technical Solution

High-efficiency LED projectors were selected for the project. The installed system features a low-energy, long-life LED light source; optics specifically designed for grazing light and the accentuation of vertical surfaces, walls, and towers; and a warm color temperature that complements the castle’s materials and its historical context.

The preliminary lighting study made it possible to define lighting hierarchies and distinct levels, creating controlled contrasts that lend visual depth and a clear three-dimensional perception of the monument as a whole. The directional adjustments made on-site were key to achieving the intended lighting effect without compromising the monument’s visual integrity.

Results Obtained

The new lighting has highlighted the castle as a dominant feature of Lanjarón’s nighttime landscape, avoiding excessive uniformity and opting for lighting based on controlled contrasts. The main tower takes on greater visual prominence, while the lower walls are illuminated at more subdued levels, creating a sense of layering and depth.
In addition, the perceived volume of the structure has been significantly enhanced, the textures and materials of the facades have been highlighted through grazing light, and energy consumption has been significantly reduced thanks to the use of efficient LED technology, reinforcing the City Council’s commitment to sustainability.
